Beyond The Studio: Social Justice Trainings For Movement teachers

Beyond the Studio:
Social Justice Trainings for Movement Teachers

We are happy to announce the second year of our Beyond the Studio Training Series! This year we are offering four trainings around creating inclusive and accessible movement classrooms with an intersectional lens of disability, gender and sexuality justice. Our training partners are Gregory Dorado and Carina Ho (Disability Justice/Integrated Dance) and Kattoris Bang (Discourse on Gender for Educators).

While these trainings are designed for dance instructors, they can be applied to yoga, fitness, and other physical activities for all ages. All sessions are free, open to any teaching artist, and take place over Zoom. Each topic will be covered in two parts, first in December 2022 and second in March 2023. The March sign-ups will open in early 2023.

Trainings are made possible with a grant from Degree’s Breaking Limits program. Participants will have the option to take additional online training modules produced by Degree and receive a $25 gift card for participation.

Schedule & Details

Integrated Dance with Carina Ho and Gregory Dorado (AXIS Dance Company)
December 2, 2022 from 11am-1pm CST: Introduction to the Topic
March 17, 2023 from 11am-1pm CST: Applied Practice

Carina Ho and Gregory Dorado, former dancer and Rehearsal Director of AXIS Dance Company, will guide participants through an exploration on how dance educators can create environments that enable all bodies and abilities to fully participate in movement. The workshop will consist of a series of interactive exercises that aim to equip participants with techniques to apply to their respective practices. In addition to practicing the generation of inclusive movement and instruction, participants will have the opportunity to critically reflect during discussions on the role of dance and the arts in advocating for authentic inclusivity.

An Intro Discourse on Gender for Educators
with indee mitchell and Nia Faulk of Kattoris Bang

December 9, 2022 from 11am-1pm CST: Introduction to the Topic
March 3, 2023 from 11am-1pm CST: Applied Practice

A basic/introductory workshop on gender specifically for teachers and educators wanting to provide safer space in their classrooms for trans and gender non conforming students. In this moment where our State legislature continues to wage war against our trans and queer youth both on the field and in the classroom, Kattoris Bang provides participants with vital knowledge and skills that better prepares educators to address various forms of gender based harm and violence against trans and gender non comforming youth in their classrooms.
